High-net worth divorce: Jeff Bezos trying to preserve his wealth

Most California residents have shopped on Amazon at one time or other. However, many may not know that the founder of the company, Jeff Bezos, is preparing for high-net worth divorce proceedings. As the richest man in the world, he reportedly has many issues to resolve, especially the 16 percent of shares he owns in the company he created and in which he acts as the current CEO.

There has been speculation regarding an alleged extramarital affair between Bezos and a former television personality. However, Bezos himself has issued a public statement, stating that he and his wife intend to part on amicable terms. He also said they are looking forward to a future where they will remain friends and, perhaps, enter joint business ventures together.

Last year, Bezo topped the Forbes billionaires list as the first person ever to have a net worth of more than $100 billion. The Bezos marriage lasted 25 years. The pair have filed their divorce petition in a state that operates under community property laws, meaning spouses typically walk away with exactly half of all marital property.

Regarding the 16 percent of shares in Amazon, community property laws could make MacKenzie Bezos the richest woman in the world. Most high-net worth divorce couples in California and other states sign prenuptial agreements before they marry. If that winds up being the case for the Bezos, it could definitely have an impact on how their assets (including the Amazon shares) are split. Spouses facing similar issues are wise to seek experienced legal support before heading to court.
